6 Basic Emotions
Sadness, Fear, Anger, Disgust, Surprise, Contempt.
Sadness
Expressed through turned down eyes and a frown.
Fear
Characterized by a clenched jaw and wide eyes, ranging from worry to horror.
Anger
Involves a tight mouth and furrowed brow, fluctuating from annoyance to rage.
Disgust
Manifested by a wrinkled nose and raised upper lip, from aversion to repulsion.
Surprise
Indicated by raised eyebrows and an open mouth, ranging from startled to astonished.
Contempt
A feeling of dislike or superiority over another person or group.
Emblems
Specific signs that indicate and project a feeling about an issue.
Body Language
Non-verbal expressions like clenched fists and hunched shoulders.
Microexpressions
Quick flashes of facial expressions that convey emotions.
Display Rules
Cultural norms that dictate when it’s appropriate to express certain emotions.
James-Lange Theory of Emotion
Suggests that physiological arousal precedes the interpretation of emotion.
Cannon-Bard Theory
Posits that physiological arousal and emotional experience occur simultaneously.
Facial Feedback Hypothesis
Suggests facial expressions can influence emotional experiences.
Appraisal Theories
Focus on how we evaluate situations to determine emotional responses.
