Ionic Bond
A chemical bond formed between a metal and a nonmetal where electrons are transferred from one atom to another.
Empirical Formula
The chemical formula representing the simplest whole-number ratio of atoms in a compound.
Properties of Ionic Compounds
Ionic compounds are generally solids at room temperature, have high melting and boiling points, and consist of a metal and a nonmetal.
Conductivity of Ionic Compounds
Ionic compounds do not conduct electricity in solid state but do in liquid and aqueous states (when dissolved in water).
Lewis Dot Diagrams
Diagrams that represent the formation of ionic compounds by showing valence electrons as dots around the atomic symbols.
NaF
The ionic compound formed from Sodium (Na) and Fluorine (F).
MgCl2
The ionic compound formed from Magnesium (Mg) and Chlorine (Cl).
Al2S3
The ionic compound formed from Aluminum (Al) and Sulfur (S).
