Messenger RNA (mRNA)
Complementary to DNA, carries messages to ribosomes for protein synthesis
Ribosomal RNA (rRNA)
Binds with proteins to make ribosomes
Transfer RNA (tRNA)
Transports amino acids to the ribosomes
Transcription (DNA to RNA)
DNA unwound, RNA polymerase makes a RNA strand complementary to the DNA one (5’ to 3’), mRNA leaves the nucleus and heads to the ribosomes
RNA processing
Happens in nucleus, mRNA is shorter than DNA - introns = sequences that are chopped out of the RNA, extrons = sequences that remain in RNA
Translation (RNA to proteins)
*Codons = 3-base code
