Magnet

any object that attracts the metal iron

Magnetic Pole

a place on a magnet where the force it applies is strongest

Magnetic forces

A force of attraction or repulsion between the poles of 2 magnets

Magnetic field

magnets can attract and repel each other (or magnetic materials) *without* having to physically touch each other.

Magnetic materials

any material that is strongly attracted to a magnet

ferromagnetic elements

Iron, Nickel, Cobalt, Neodymium, Steel (steel is not an element but contains iron so it is ferromagnetic)

magnetic domains

the magnetic poles of an atom

nonmagnetic magnetic domain

the magnetic domains are askew

permanent magnet magnetic domain

magnetic domains are always aligned

 temporary magnets

their magnetic domains can become lined up for a short period of time if a magnetic field is applied to them

electromagnet

a temporary magnet created by wrapping a current carrying wire around a ferromagnetic core and turned on and off by electricity

electric motor

a device that uses an electric current to produce motion by converting electrical energy into mechanical energy using magnetism

commutator

A device that reverses the direction of the current

electric generator

a device that uses a magnetic field to use mechanical energy to turn a shaft or turbine that spins the coil of wire in between the permanent magnets and electricity is generated in the wire

direct current

electricity that flows in only one direction

Alternating current

electric current that changes direction in a regular pattern

turbine

a shaft with a set of blades that spins when a stream of pressurized fluid strikes the blades
