Useful Quote from Rhiannon Newton

“Repeated actions carve themselves into the space. Worlds grow, identifiable, specific and toned. The choreography speaks of the human dancing and the world it exists in.”

Overall Choreographic Intent

The set solo focuses on the repetitiveness that is a part of our day-to-day lives. Repetition and habit is key to how we all survive; how we learn, how we work and how we cope with change. This process of repetition can be viewed as responsible for defining and shaping the particular identity of a body, landscape, experience or action.

First Section

This section of the set solo combines a lot of whipping and attacking movement. There is a sense that the dancer is trying to move forward in each direction but is repeatedly forced backwards. The shape specificity of the section could indicate to the viewer an aggressive state, mechanical imagery or a sharp and angular architecture.

Second Section

Begins with deconstructed floor work that builds into travelling and spiralling pathways. It can be viewed as describing a reptilian quality. An identity initially ground bound and limbless, but capable of graceful, spiralling forms.

Third Section

The third section is composed of very subtle uncurling and folding movements. The wight of gravity is emphasized in the sudden dropping actions and the repeated falling into and climbing out of the floor. There is a sense of a long journey and a quiet individual struggle.

Fourth Section

This section is a map of the three movement worlds that have been constructed. There is a sense of zooming out, and detail diminishing from the initial constructions, but key identifiable actions reappear and remind us of where we have been.
