The Connecticut Compromise

there were different opinions of among the states and how they should be represented in congress:

  • states with a large population wanted representation to be based on population

  • states with small population wanted equal representation per state

the Connecticut compromise agreed on the bicameral structure of the United States congress, in which the senate has equal representation per state and the House of Representatives has representation based on population

Three Fifths Compromise

there was a disagreement between the north and south states about slaves and if they should be considered aspart of a state’s population.

  • southern states had a large slavery population which would have increased their representation in the House of Representatives

  • the Three Fifths Compromise meant that a slave would count as 3/5 of a person

  • this remained until 1865 when slavery was abolished by the 13th Amendment
