Allegory
A simple story which has symbolic meaning and more complex level of meaning. Characters, setting, objects, and colors can all stand for, or represent other bigger ideas.
Allusion
A breif, indirect refrence to a well known person, place, thing, or idea from history, literature, mythology, or culture, allowing a writer to add meaning by relying on the readers existing knowledge.
Analogy
An idea, concept, or thing is compared to something else that is significantly different from the first.
Anaphoria
Repeating a phrase at the start of sentences to build emphasis.
Aphorism
A short, memorable saying that expressees a general truth.
Parallelism
Describes sentence structure where the same pattern of words is used to show that two or more ideas have the same level of importance. These sentences contain lists, and often the words are linked with “and” or “or”.
