TISSUE MEMBRANE
Thin sheet of tissues that covers a structure or lines a cavity
External - Cutaneous Membrane (Skin)
Internal -Mucous Membrane, Serous Membrane, SynovialMembrane
4 tissue membranes (1 external; 3 internal)
MUCOUS MEMBRANE
Lines cavities and canals that open to the outside of the body
Consist of: epithelial cells, basement membrane & lamina propria
Lamina Propria – thick layer of loose connective tissue
Functions (depending on location): Protection, Absorption, Secretion
GOBLET CELLS
secretes mucus and are widely distributed to mucous membrane (but not all)
SEROUS MEMBRANE
Lines cavities that do not open to the exterior of the body
Pericardial(heart),pleural(lungs),peritoneal(abdomen)
3 components: mesothelium (simple squamous epithelium layer), basement membrane & loose connective tissue
Does not contain glands
Secrete SEROUS FLUID→lubricates the serous membranes→reduces friction
Line freely movable joints
Made up o ONLY connective tissue
Produces SYNOVIAL FLUID→facilitate smooth movement within the joint
