The effectiveness of a buffer solution is based on two factors:
buffer capacity and effective pH range.
Buffer capacity refers to the
ability of the buffer solution to resist a change in pH when an acid or base is added. Buffer capacity is dependent on the concentration of HA and A−.
Buffers are most effective at pH values within
1 pH unit of the pKa of the buffer’s conjugate acid. The buffer′s pH range is Pka±1.
