What landforms are characteristic of Karoo landscapes?
Mesas, buttes, and conical hills
What is a mesa?
A landform with a large flat top.
What are inclined strata?
Layers of rock below the Earth’s surface which tilt at an angle due to tectonic forces, exposing hard and soft layers at the surface.
What are the three types of homoclinal ridges, classified by dip angle?
Cuesta (10º-25º), Homoclinal ridge (25º-45º), and Hogsback ridge (45º+)
How does the spacing of contour lines indicate slope steepness on a topographic map?
Contours far apart show a gentle slope, while contours close together show a steep slope.
Define mass movement.
The movement of soil, loose stones, and rocks down a slope.
Name three types of mass movement.
Soil creep, solifluction, landslides, rockfalls, mudflows, slumps
List the slope elements.
Crest, Free Face, Tallus, Pediment
What is the shape and soil process occurring in a crest slope?
Convex and soil creep
What safety measures were implemented at Chapman's Peak to mitigate rockfalls?
A concrete tunnel and canopies, catch fences, and storm water drainage systems.
