In Case of Fire
If you feel unsafe, evacuate; turn off any open bunsen burners on your way out.
Fire Extinguisher Use
Fire extinguishers are not your responsibility to use; evacuate and alert the instructor.
Stop, Drop, and Roll
Procedure for a person on fire; stop, drop, and roll to smother flames.
Fire Blanket
Used to cover a person on fire; you are authorized to obtain it.
Watch Glass
A small glass cover used to contain or smother a fire that is growing too large.
Shower/Eyewash Station
If a large amount of chemical spills on a person, move them to the shower/eyewash immediately.
Rinse with Water
For small chemical spills on skin, rinse with water in the sink and notify the instructor.
Spill Reporting
All spills, whether on a person or not, should be reported immediately.
Lab Attire
Wear long pants, closed-toed shoes, and goggles for every lab.
Hair Restraint
Long hair (shoulder length or longer) should be tied back when required.
Lab Aprons
Aprons may be required in some labs; wear as instructed.
Dress Code Consequences
Failure to wear proper clothing can result in disqualification from the lab and make-up time.
Weighing Tools
Common tools: weigh boat (primary), watch glass or evaporating dish as alternatives.
Tare (Zeroing)
Zero the balance before weighing to set tare mass.
Mass by Subtraction
Alternative method: record weigh boat mass and subtract from final measurement.
Weigh Boat Removal
Remove the weigh boat from the balance after adding the solid.
Target Mass Proximity
Aim to achieve a mass just below the target; do not return extra solid to the original bottle.
Progress Check
Place the weigh boat back on the balance to verify progress.
Scoopula Usage
Use a scoopula for the last fractions of a gram; keep the weigh boat on the balance only as needed.
Balance Hygiene
Wipe the balance surface clean after use for the next student.
Balance Sensitivity
Balances can be sensitive; avoid leaning near or moving the balance.
Graduated Cylinder
Instrument to measure liquid volume; choose a cylinder that holds the target volume.
Pouring Protocol
Pour directly into the cylinder to just below the target, never back into the original bottle.
Pipette Adjustment
Use a pipette to bring the liquid up to the exact target volume.
Meniscus Reading
Read volume at eye level from the bottom of the curved meniscus.
Two-Scale Labeling
Some cylinders have two sets of numbers; read the correct scale for your measurement.
Bunsen Burner Safety
Select a safe resting spot, inspect valves and the supply line, and secure connections.
Gas Line Connection
Attach the supply line to the burner and gas supply by pushing and twisting until secure.
Ignition Procedure
Turn on gas toward the supply line and strike with the striker to create sparks.
Lighting Troubleshooting
If the burner does not light after 4–5 strikes, turn off gas and retry later.
Flame Adjustment
Use the bottom knob to adjust gas flow; adjust air with the shaft for flame size and color.
Unattended Burner
Never leave a lit Bunsen burner unattended.
Test Tube Heating Safety
Point heated tubes away from people to avoid exposure to hot glass or contents.
Hot Glass Awareness
You cannot tell if glass is hot by sight; use tongs if it could be hot.
Chemical Waste Disposal
Dispose of chemical waste using approved methods; do not pour down the sink.
Injury Protocol
Notify the instructor immediately if you are injured.
Glassware Inspection
Check glassware for damage or residue before use.
Hand Hygiene
Wash your hands after finishing a lab.
Ask for Help
If unsure about anything, ask your instructor for clarification.
