Low air pressure
warm, moist air
cloudy weather with precipitation
High air pressure
cool, dry air
clear, fair weather with light winds
difference in air pressure density
low pressure-less dense(rises)
high pressure-more dense(sinks)
how air pressure relates to humidity
They are opposites. As humidity increases, air pressure decreases. (vice versa)
how air pressure can cause winds
air moves from high pressure areas to low pressure areas, creating horizontal currents known as wind. wind is caused by the differences in air pressure
radiant definition
energy that is transferred by electromagnetic radiation
ex: the sun which emits radiant energy in the form of light and other electromagnetic waves
convection
the transfer of heat by movement of a fluid
conduction
the direct transfer of heat from one substance to another that is is touching
condensation
the process by which molecules of water vapor in the air cool down and become liquid water
evaporation
the process by which water molecules in liquid water escape into the air as water vapor
how does humidity affect weather
def: the amount of water vapor in the air
affects cloud formation, precipitation, and the way air feels (more water vapor, more precipitation)
how does dew point affect weather
def: the temperature at which condensation occurs
affects how muggy or humid the air will feel, formation of clouds, higher heat index, and development of thunderstorms and tornadoes
how does air pressure affect weather
affects the winds, precipitation.
High air pressure: clear, fair day
Low air pressure: cloudy and rainy
how do ocean currents affect weather
ocean currents regulate climate
Influence temperature, precipitation, and even distribution of sea and ice. Warm currents cause increased evaporation which lends to storm formation.
how do weather fronts affect weather conditions
warm fronts: bring prolonged periods of light precipitation, fog, and higher temperatures
cold fronts: bring thunderstorms, drop in temperatures, and change in wind direction
stationary fronts: prolonged period of precipitation(flooding), and more moisture
occluded fronts: strong winds and heavy precipitation
how do air masses affect weather
warm, humid air masses can bring hot, sticky conditions. cold, dry air masses can bring, clear, cold weather. The movement of air masses can lead to changes in wind direction and speed
what causes weather
energy from the sun, uneven heating of the earths surface, and seasons causing different weather patterns
occluded front
a type of weather front that forms when a cold front overtakes a warm front during the development of a cyclone
how does temperature affect weather conditions
