Plessner: Humans are “naturally artificial” due to their ability to distance themselves from their biological nature and create culture and tools to navigate existence: dog w/ bread on floor vs. humans) an interruption of instincts from stimulation/reaction=culture. Humans are part of nature, but transcend it. Don’t simply feed themselves, they create food culture.

Simmel: eating is a common need, yet individualized, what one person eats cannot be eaten by another; eating together is to share a basic need- act of fraternization (crucial aspect of group formation)- gives rise to the common meal, governed by countless unwritten rules(trained through socialization). Becomes unified ritual for belonging, spatial and temporal orders
