Endothermic Reactions
Reactions that absorb heat and feel cold.
Exothermic Reactions
Reactions that release heat and feel hot.
Examples of Endothermic Reactions
Photosynthesis and thermal decomposition
Examples of Exothermic Reactions
Respiration, neutralization, and burning fuels
Three things needed for burning to take place
Oxygen, heat, and fuel
Examples of fuels
Petrol, coal, paper, wood, gas.
Complete Combustion
When there is plenty of oxygen available for a chemical to burn.
Incomplete Combustion
When oxygen is limited when a chemical burns (e.g., carbon burns to make carbon monoxide).
Oxide
Metal + oxygen (e.g., magnesium + oxygen -> magnesium oxide)
Monoxide
Non-metal + limited oxygen (e.g., carbon + limited oxygen -> carbon monoxide)
Dioxide
Non-metal + oxygen (e.g., carbon + oxygen -> carbon dioxide)
Fuels
Substances that release a lot of energy when burnt.
Catalyst
A substance that speeds up a chemical reaction but remains unchanged at the end.
