Homeostasis
The maintenance of the internal environment of the body.
Set point
The ideal norm value for a homeostatic variable.
Normal Range
Values that increase or decrease around a set point.
Variables
Factors that can change homeostatic levels.
Negative Feedback
The mechanism to maintain homeostasis by resisting any deviation from the Set Point.
Receptor
Monitors the value of the variable.
Control Centre
Receives information about the variable.
Effector
Produces responses that change the value of the variable.
Positive Feedback
When a deviation from the norm occurs it gets larger; not a normal homeostatic response.
Thermoregulation
The homeostatic regulation of body temperature.
Osmoregulation
The homeostatic regulation of body water levels.
Glucoregulation
The homeostatic regulation of blood sugar levels.
Homeostatic Imbalance
A condition where homeostasis is not maintained, leading to diseases.
Diabetes
An inability to regulate blood sugars.
Dehydration
An imbalance in body water levels.
Hypoglycemia
Low blood sugar.
Hyperglycemia
High blood sugar.
Gout
A disease characterized by high uric acid levels.
Malnutrition
A condition resulting from a diet lacking the balanced molecular composition.
Undernutrition
A condition due to a diet lacking sufficient molecules.
