Light Horse "light-bloods"

Slender body and legs, smaller bones; refined features. High-strung/energy; intelligent, athletic., Height: 15-17.2 hands; Weight: 900-1200 Ib. Examples: Arabian, Thoroughbred

Heavy horse "cold-bloods" or draft

Thicker body and legs, esp. bones. More depth of body than length of leg. More docile and easy going. Height: 16-18 hands; weight: > 1400 Ib. Examples: Clydesdale, Belgian.

Warm bloods (developed by crossing carriage and war horses with hot bloods)

"Big boned riding horses." Bred in Europe for dressage and jumping. Height: 15.5-17 hands. Quieter in disposition than light breeds. Examples: Trakehner, Hanoverian, American Quarter Horse, Appaloosa, Morgan.

Arabian (oldest breed of horse in the world)

Endurance and agility; great stamina. Dished-faced, prominent eyes; large nostrils; small muzzle; distinct, graceful arch in neck. Used primarily as show horses and as competitive trail and endurance horses.

Thoroughbred (originally bred in Europe)

Developed as racing horses, hunters, jumpers, dressage, polo. Stream-lined horse; tall, long-legged. High strung.

American Quarter Horse

General purpose; light draft, ranch-work. Sprinter. Well-muscled bodies and powerful, rounded hindquarters. Relatively quiet in temperament. Showing, recreational riding, ranch and rodeo, youth mount and racing. AQHA established in 1940.
