Step 1: Prepare equipment
Gather all necessary suctioning supplies
Step 2: Connect catheter to vacuum, test suction
Ensure suction is functioning properly
Step 3: Explain procedure
Inform patient to reduce anxiety and gain cooperation
Step 4: Position patient
Place patient appropriately for airway access
Step 5: Hand hygiene
Wash hands before starting procedure
Step 6: Pre-oxygenate
Provide 100% O₂ for 30 sec – 3 min
Step 7: Apply sterile glove
Maintain aseptic technique
Step 8: Insert sterile catheter
Insert quickly and gently into airway
Step 9: Withdraw catheter with suction
Close suction port while withdrawing with rotating motion
Step 10: Instill saline if secretions thick
Use drops to loosen secretions
Step 11: Hyper-oxygenate
Provide 100% O₂ for 1–5 minutes after suctioning
Step 12: Flush tubing
Use sterile water to clear suction tubing
Step 13: Dispose of equipment
Discard used supplies safely
Step 14: Turn off suction
Shut down suction unit
Step 15: Hand hygiene
Wash hands after procedure
Step 16: Ensure suction unit ready
Prepare suction unit for next use
