Atria
upper two chambers
Ventricles
lower two chambers
Epicardium
outer layer of the wall of the heart
Myocardium
muscular middle layer of the wall of the heart
Endocardium
inner layer of the heart
Atrioventricular Bundle
bundle of fibers that carry cardiac impulses
Atrioventricular Node
section of nodal tissue that delays and relays cardiac impulses
Diastole phase
heart ventricles are relaxed and the heart fills with blood
Systole phase
ventricles contract and pump blood to the arteries
Aortic valve
prevents the backflow of blood as it is pumped from the left ventricle to the aorta.
Mitral valve
prevents the backflow of blood as it is pumped from the left atrium to the left ventricle
Pulmonary valve
prevents the backflow of blood as it is pumped from the right ventricle to the pulmonary artery
Tricuspid valve
prevents backflow of blood as it is pumped from the right atrium to the right ventricle
Pulmonary circulation
Blood traveling to lungs for oxygen (picks up O2 and releasesCO2)
Key structures: right side of heart, lung, pulmonary arteries & veins
Systemic circulation
Blood traveling to the rest of the body
Key structures: left side of heart, aorta, superior and inferior vena cava
Coronary circulation
Supplies heart with blood & nutrients
Key structures: left coronary arteries, cardiac veins
