What was the main focus of Romantic Music?
It was a way to express emotions and composers believed it was the best art form for capturing human feelings. They expanded the emotional depth of music and often used narrative forms to tell stories. They prioritised emotion and storytelling over strict musical structure.
What is some context for the Romantic Period?
Music joined the Romantic Period later than other arts. But by the mid-1800s, Romanticism had spread across all arts.
It was influenced by Enlightenment ideas of individualism. It pushed back against the industrial revolution’s focus.
It reflected the nationalism and conflicts from the French Revolution to the unification of the 1870s.
