What are the elements in group 0 known as?

Nobel gases

2
New cards

Describe the noble gases.

  • Inert

  • Non-flammable

  • Exists as monatomic gases

  • All colourless gases at room temperature (low boiling points)

3
New cards

Why are Nobel gases inert?

Nobel gases do not form molecules or compounds because their atoms have stable arrangement of electrons - all have full outer energy shells

So they do not need to gain or lose electrons to become stable

4
New cards

Are Nobel gases monatonic or diatomic?

Monatomic

5
New cards

What increases as relative atomic mass increases (so as you move down the group)

The boiling points of the Nobel gases increases with increasing relative atomic mass

This is die to an increase in the size of the atom - meaning there are greater intermolecular forces between them
