What is communication?
A process of exchanging ideas between two or more people using words, sounds, signs, or behaviors to express information, thoughts, or feelings.
Where does the word 'communication' originate from?
From the Latin 'communis' meaning common, or to come together/share something in common.
What did Maslog (1988) say about the value of communication?
Communication is the cement that holds society together; without it, society would fall apart.
What is the basic nature of communication in relation to human life?
It is related to human activity and is present in personal, family, cultural, and organizational existence.
How many parties are involved in a typical communication exchange?
At least two parties (two or more).
Can communication be one-way, two-way, or both?
It can be one-way or two-way; in two-way communication, the receiver provides feedback to the sender.
What determines the success of communication?
Proper understanding by the receiver and feedback; without feedback, the sender may not grasp the receiver’s view.
How does organizational communication flow commonly occur?
Information can flow upward, downward, and horizontally (across levels).
Name the seven major elements of the communication process.
Sender, Ideas, Encoding, Channel, Receiver, Decoding, Feedback.
Who is the Sender in the communication process?
The person who intends to convey the message.
What are 'Ideas' in the communication process?
The subject matter of the communication—opinions, attitudes, feelings, views, orders, or suggestions.
What is Encoding in communication?
Converting the subject matter into symbols (words, actions, pictures, etc.) for transmission.
What is the 'Channel' in communication?
The medium through which the message is transmitted; can be formal or informal.
Who is the Receiver in the communication process?
The person who receives the message and tries to understand it.
What is Decoding in communication?
Interpreting the received symbols to extract meaning for understanding.
What is Feedback in the communication process?
The process of confirming that the receiver has received and understood the message as intended.
What is the Linear Model of Communication?
A one-way model with a speaker/sender, a message, and a receiver.
What is the Interactive Model of Communication?
Also called the stimulus-response model; includes feedback between the speaker and the receiver.
From the group activity, which components can form a communication model?
Encoder, decoder, message, transmitter, information source, destination, noise, interpreter, and receiver.
