Aristotle

• disagreed with 4 elements of other Greek Philosophers

• believed that the 4 elements were hot, dry, wet, and cold, which could then combine to create the elements: earth, fire, water, air

• introduced idea of earth centered model of our solar system, but couldn’t explain it

Ptolemy

• enhanced geocentric model of the S.S (Ptolemaic Model)

• used epicycles to explain retrograde motion (minor orbits)

• model was accepted for around 1,400 yrs

Tycho Brahe

• Designed and built astronomical instruments. (Ex: Sextants and Quadrants)

• Accurately mapped the night Sky.

• Observed planetary bodies throughout their orbits.

• Tychonic Model of S.S.

• Observed (naked eye) the SN 1572 supernova on November 11th, 1572

• Established and built the Uraniborg, an early astronomical institute (Hven)

Nicholas Copernicus

• Developed of the Heliocentric Model.

• Wrote “De Revolutionibus Orbium Coelestium” ~1514

• Thought the planet’s orbits formed perfect circles around the Sun.

Galileo Galilei

• Invented different science equipment & Vastly improved the telescope.

• Discovered 4 moons of Jupiter.

• Defended heliocentric but forced to recant

  and live in house arrest.

• Father of Modern Science

Johannes Kepler

• Father of Planetary Motions

• Proposed Three laws of Orbital motion.

• Made The Heliocentric Model More Accurate.
