Aim
To test whether doodling while listening to a boring telephone message would aid information recall.
Research Method
Laboratory experiment using independent measures design.
Independent Variable (IV)
Whether participants were in the doodling group or the non-doodling (control) group.
Dependent Variable (DV)
The number of correct names and places participants could recall from the message.
Sample size
40 participants (mostly female) aged 18–55, oppurtunity sampling
Procedure
Participants listened to a monotonous telephone message and the doodling group shaded in shapes while listening.
Key Result
Doodling group recalled significantly more names and places.
Conclusion
Doodling aids concentration and enhances memory for auditory material.
Ethical Consideration
Participants were unaware of the memory test (potential deception) and were debriefed afterward.
Strength
High control due to lab experiment, standardized procedure, and easily replicable.
Weakness
Low ecological validity as it is not a real-life task, and possible individual differences in doodling habits.
