Containment

US wanted to contain communism to the Soviet Union so it wouldn’t spread to the countries around it

Satellite Nations

Poland, Czechoslovakia, Hungary, Romania, Bulgaria, and East Germany

NATO

North Atlantic Treaty Organization, created in 1949 for collective security from the Soviet Union

Warsaw Pact

Created in 1955, a military alliance between the Soviet Union and it’s satellite states, a direct response to NATO

McCarthyism

the practice of making public accusations of disloyalty or subversion with little or no evidence, often used to suppress opposition and create a climate of fear

Blacklist

A list of people in Hollywood that shouldn’t be hired because of potential or accused communist affiliations

HUAC

House Committee on Un-American Activities was formed in 1945 and was used to attack and potentially prosecute people accused of communist affiliations

Marshall Plan

Provided financial aid to help rebuild Europe after WW2 in 1947

Truman Doctrine

Stated the US would aid nations overseas to resist communism in reaction to Great Britain becoming unable to support Greece and Turkey, mostly for European nations

Berlin Blockade

Stalin blockaded Berlin in 1948 because they wanted us to leave West Berlin, we responded with the Berlin Airlift

Berlin Airlift

Truman’s response to Stalin’s blockade in Berlin, we flew in supplies and food to West Berlin

Berlin Wall

Khrushchev ordered this to be built to divide East and West Berlin to keep people from fleeing West.

Eisenhower Doctrine

stated that the U.S. would provide economic and military aid to countries in the Middle East and North Africa that were threatened by armed aggression from communist countries, a response to the Suez Crisis

Limited Test Ban Treaty

an international arms control agreement signed in 1963 that prohibited nuclear weapons test in the atmosphere, outer space, and underwater
