Utilitarianism:

supports what is best for most people the main emphasis is on the outcome or consequences “THE GREATER GOOD”

ANA code of Ethics:

• statement of ethical obligations & duties of a nurse

• professions NON-Negotiable ethical standards

• nursing professions statement of commitment to society

• guides the behavior of the professional nurse

Provision 1:

practice with compassion & respect ; value inherent dignity & worth of every person

• right to self determination

Provision 2:

nurses primary commitment is to the pt

• collaboration avoiding conflicts of interest

Provision 3:

nurse promotes & advocates for the rights , health, & safety of PT

• confidentiality

Provision 4:

at all times responsibility & accountability for each nurses actions

Provision 5:

nurses duty to maintain competence

Provision 6:

nurses responsible in creating , promoting & maintaining an ethical environment

nurses advance the nursing profession through research & scholarly inquiry
