8.10 The African American Civil Right Movement in the 1960s

Martin Luther King

• leader of the civil rights movement

• wrote the Letter from Birmingham Jail which emphasized the importance of having civil rights laws

• inspired Kennedy to support a tougher civil rights bill

• said the I have a dream speech that appealed to ending racial prejudice and ended with everyone singing

Civil Rights Act

made segregation illegal in all public facilities, including hotels and restaurants, and gave the federal govenrment more power to enforce school desgregation

Equal Employment Opportunity Commission

end discrimination in employment on the basis of race, religion, sexx, or national origin

24th amendment

abloished the practice of collecting a poll tax

Voting Rights Act of 1965

• ended literacy tests and provided federal registrars in areas where african americans had been kept from voting since reconstruction

Black Muslim

• emphasized a radical view of civil rights, preached black nationalism, separatism, and self improvement

• Malcom X

Student Nonviolent Coordinating Committee and Congress of Racial Eqaulity

• influenced from Malcolm X

• the CORE (second group) repudiated nonviolence and wanted black power

• Black panthers were established as a revolutionary socialist movement advocating self-rule for American blacks

race riots

• riots that broke out in black neighborhoods of major cities, with increasing casualties and destruction of property…made whites suspect that black extremists and revolutionaries were behind the biolence

de facto segregation

discrimnation caused by racist attitudes in the north and west , not just the south

• largest demonstration in us history- I have a dream speech
