Optic nerves
Sensory tracts that connect the retina of the posterior eyeball to brains sensory tract for visual signals, the optic nerve
Sclera
opaque; forms the bulk of the fibrous tunic
Cornea
Clear; Allows light to enter the eye
Fibrous tunic
Outermost protective layer of the eye. Composed of avascular (no blood vessels) connective tissue. (Sclera and the cornea)
Vascular tunic
Middle tunic; contains blood vessels. Choroid, ciliary body, ciliary processes, iris and pupil.
Choroid
Contains pigment that prevents scattering of light
Ciliary body
Composed of ciliary muscle that controls lens shape
Ciliary processes
Secretes aqueous humor
Iris
Pigmented, giving the eye its color
Pupil
Rounded opening that light comes through and regulates the amount of light that enters the eye.
Extrinsic eye muscle
6 muscles that voluntarily move the eye
Aqueous humor
The fluid that fills the anterior chamber of the eye
Sensory Tunic
Innermost tunic; forms the two layered retina.
Pigmented epithelial layer (tunic)
Lines vascular tunic
Neural layer (tunic)
Contains photoreceptors (transduce light energy into electrical anergy). Rods: Sensitive for dim/low-level light vision; Cones: Good for acuity in vision
Tapetum lucidum
An additional tissue in the cow eye. It allows light that has passed through the retina to reflect back, thus increasing the brightness of the image produced
Vitreous humor
Clear gel like substance that fills the posterior chamber of the eye. Reinforces the eye
