Ionic Bond
A chemical bond formed between metals and nonmetals.
Naming Ionic Compounds
The metal is always listed first, followed by the nonmetal which ends with the suffix -ide.
Characteristics of Ionic Compounds
They dissolve easily in water and polar solvents and conduct electricity in solution.
Ionic Compound Formation
Ionic compounds tend to form crystals with high melting temperatures.
Valence Electrons
Electrons in the outermost shell of an atom that are involved in chemical bonding.
Oxidation Number
The charge of an atom in a compound, indicating the number of electrons gained or lost.
Sodium Chloride
An example of a simple ionic compound where sodium (Na) and chloride (Cl) are bonded.
Subscripts in Compounds
Numbers used in formulas to indicate the number of each type of atom in the compound.
Metal and Nonmetal
Metals tend to lose electrons and form positive ions, while nonmetals gain electrons to form negative ions.
Common Ionic Charges
Examples include +1 for sodium, +2 for beryllium, and -1 for fluorine.
