What was the south like after the civil war?
It was completely destroyed and ruined.
Who were the planters?
People who owned plantations and used slave labor.
What was the greatest loss for the south?
Losing all of their slaves.
What happened to the plantation system?
The plantation system eventually collapsed because there were no slaves.
What happened to the people that invested in confederate money?
They became poor and couldn’t pay for anything because all their money that they invested in was worthless
Why did many of them have to sell their land?
Because they were in debt and had no money because the confederate money being nonexistent
What price did they sell their land?
They had sold their land for very low prices to people in the north.
Define tenant farmer
A farmer who rents farmland and farms it, and either pays the rent with real money or a portion of the crops
Define sharecroppers
Farmers who work at another person‘s land and get paid with a portion of the crops.
Mini Friedman were tenant farmers and sharecroppers. What two problems did they face due to this situation?
They would have to grow certain and crops, tobacco and cotton, which would drain some of the important minerals from the soil, which left the soil poor and useless
Tenants would have to buy many different varieties of supplies to enrich the soil, which would drain them from their money, even more making their crops, not worth any money because they spent as much as they were making just to grow Them.

Some people took Lincoln’s last name to remember him, and some took their slaveholder’s last name.
What was the primary role for the freedom bureaus
To help former slaves to their new freedom

Why did the Freedman’s bureau have to help Freedman with contracts?
So that they would be protected from unfair labor, and so that they understood their rights.
