Communication Effectiveness
Successful communication is achieved when meaning is accurately transferred between individuals.
One-Way Communication
A communication style where the sender transmits a message to the receiver without feedback.
Two-Way Communication
A communication style that involves feedback from the receiver to the sender, allowing for open exchange of information.
Nonverbal Communication
A form of communication that includes body language, facial expressions, and gestures, and constitutes 65-90% of the overall message.
Barriers to Communication
Factors that prevent messages from being clearly understood; includes language, emotional state, cultural differences, and perception.
Ladder of Inference
A model that explains how individuals make conclusions and assumptions based on their observations and selected data.
Hofstede's Cultural Dimensions
A framework for understanding how the values and behaviors of individuals differ across cultures, including dimensions like individualism vs. collectivism and power distance.
Cultural Awareness
The ability to recognize and appropriately respond to cultural differences in global settings.
Adaptation in Communication
Adjusting communication styles and assumptions after receiving additional information or feedback.
Individualism vs. Collectivism
A cultural dimension that contrasts the focus on individual goals versus group goals.
Power Distance
How much a culture accepts and expects inequalities in power distribution.
Uncertainty Avoidance
The extent to which people in a culture feel uncomfortable with ambiguity and uncertainty.

A cultural dimension that contrasts a focus on achievement and assertiveness with a focus on nurturing and care.
Long-Term vs. Short-Term Orientation
The distinction between a focus on future rewards and the importance of the present.
Indulgence vs. Restraint
A cultural dimension that contrasts the enjoyment of life with strict social norms and restrictions.
