Transformer
is an alternating device that transfers power from one circuit to another without a rotating part and change or frequency
Transformer
it works on the principle of mutual induction
Mutual induction
is the basis of transformer between two circuits link by a common magnetic flux.
Joseph Henry and Michael Faraday 1030s
work with electromagnets and discover the property of induction independently on separate continent
Rev. Nicholas Callan 1836
invents the induction coil
Pavel Yablochkov 1876
uses induction coils in his lighting system
Ganz Company 1878-1885
uses induction coils in their lighting system with AC incandescent systems. This is the first appearance and use of toroidal shaped transformer.
Charles F. Brush 1881
develops his own design of transformer
Sebastian Ziani de Ferranti 1880-1882
design one of the earliest AC power system with William Thompson. He creates early transformer
Lucien Gaulard and John Dixon Gibbs 1882
first built a “secondary generator” or in today’s terminology a step down transformer
transformer timeline in 1884
Otto Blathy suggested the use of closed-cores, Karoly Zipernowsky the use of shunt connections, and Miksa Deri had performed the experiment.
William Stanley 1885
makes the transformer more practical due to some design changes
Step-up transformer
the function of converting low voltage and high current from the transformer primary side to high voltage and low current value on the transformers secondary side.
Step-down transformer
converts high voltage with low current from the primary side of the transformer to low voltage and high current value on the secondary side of transformer.
Core-type construction
it is in the form of rectangular frame made from cold rolled grain oriented sheet steel ( C.R.G.O) with silicon steel lamination.
Shell-type construction
the magnetic circuit (core) surrounds a considerable portion of windings. The primary and secondary windings are place on a central limb of the core.
Single-phase transformer
is an electrical device that accepts singe-phased AC power and output single-phase AC. They are used as a step-down transformer to decrease the home voltage to a suitable value without change in frequency.
Three-phase transformer
are used for electrical power generation, transmission, and distribution, as well as for industrial uses.
