Gait Cycle
Sequence of movements during walking, beginning and ending with the same foot contact with the ground.
Stance Phase
Phase of the gait cycle where the foot is in contact with the ground (60% of the cycle).
Swing Phase
Phase of the gait cycle where the foot is off the ground (40% of the cycle).
Core Muscles
Muscles that stabilize the spine, pelvis, and torso, including abdominal, back, and pelvic floor muscles.
Central Nervous System (Gait)
Motor cortex and cerebellum coordinate movement.
Peripheral Nervous System (Gait)
Sciatic, femoral, and tibial nerves control lower limb muscles.
Balance and Stability (Gait)
Achieved through coordination between joints and muscles, particularly the hip abductors.
Efficiency (Gait)
Proper energy transfer during gait reduces fatigue.
Hemiplegic Gait
A common gait pathology due to stroke.
Trendelenburg Gait
A common gait pathology due to weak hip abductors.
Ataxic Gait
A common gait pathology due to cerebellar dysfunction.
Flat Feet (Pes Planus)
A condition referring to a lack of arch in the foot.
Overpronation
Excessive inward rolling of the foot during movement.
