Rock
A mixture of minerals.
Minerals
Naturally occurring substances that can be classified as elements and compounds.
Limestone, chalk and marble
Rocks which contain mainly the mineral calcite.
Calcite
A natural form of calcium carbonate.
Ore
Natural rock that contains a high concentration of one or more valuable minerals, typically including metals.
Bauxite
Main ore of aluminium that contains mainly aluminium oxide (Al2O3).
Copper pyrite
The main ore of copper that contains mainly copper iron sulphide (CuFeS2).
Haematite
The main ore of iron that contains mainly iron(III) oxide (Fe2O3).
Galena
The main ore of lead that contains mainly lead(II) sulphide (PbS).
Metallic bond
Refers to the electrostatic attraction between negatively charged delocalized electrons and positively charged metal ions.
Chemical bond
The electrostatic attraction that holds atoms or ions together.
Cation
Ions with a positive charge.
Anion
Ions with a negative charge.
Simple ion
Derives from a single atom.
Polyatomic ion
Derives from a group of atoms.
