Intergroup Behaviour
Any perception, cognition, or behaviour influenced by people’s recognition that they and others are members of distinct social groups.
In-group
A social group to which a person belongs and identifies with, often seen as 'us'.
Out-group
A social group that a person does not belong to or identify with, often seen as 'them'.
Realistic Conflict Theory (RCT)
A theory that explains intergroup conflict as arising when groups compete for limited resources.
Social Identity Theory (SIT)
A theory that emphasizes the role of group membership in self-concept and intergroup bias.
Positive Distinctiveness
The motivation to positively differentiate oneself or one's group from others.
Minimal Group Paradigm
An experimental methodology used to study intergroup behaviour based on minimal group distinctions.
Prejudice
Negative pre-judgment based on group membership distinctions, always involving negativity towards an out-group.
Traditional Prejudice
Overt expressions of prejudice that have declined in recent years.
Modern Prejudice
Subtle forms of prejudice that emerge as social desirability influences the expression of overt prejudice.
Social Dominance Orientation (SDO)
A personality trait reflecting an individual's preference for inequality among social groups.
Right-Wing Authoritarianism (RWA)
A personality trait characterized by submission to established authorities and aggression towards out-groups.
Implicit Association Test (IAT)
A psychological test that measures implicit attitudes and beliefs that are not consciously accessible.
Gender Belief Theory (GBT)
Suggests that prejudice towards homosexuals may result from perceived violations of gender role expectations.
