define sports confidence
a general disposition which is stable and global
how someone feels about their abilities in sport
e.g. i am good at sport
define self efficacy
how sure someone is of their competence in a task specific skill
it is unstable (changing/unpredictable)
e.g. a hockey goal keeper may be confident in their ability to stop a goal in a school pe lesson, but less confident in a competitive league match
positive impacts of a high level of sports confidence
increased quality of performance and success due to increased participation and persistence
increased participation due to the expectation of success and therefore motivation/enjoyment
increased self esteem due to experiencing success
what type of behaviour do people with high self efficacy adopt?
approach behaviour - more likely to ‘give it a go’
what type of behaviour do people with low self efficacy adopt?
avoidance behaviour - less likely to give things a go
describe vealey’s model of sports confidence
suggests that your trait sports confidence (innate belief in sporting ability), objective sports confidence and competitive orientation (how prepared an individual is to compete) affect your state sports confidence (individuals belief of their ability to be successful at the time)
your state sports confidence affects the performance of the skill and your subjective perceptions of the outcome
your subjective perceptions of the outcome will also affect your trait sports confidence and competitive orientation (positively or negatively)
describe bandura’s theory of self efficacy
it suggests that a performers level of self efficacy depends on four factors
performance accomplishments - the previous successes that a performer has had (if a performer has had success then they will have a higher self efficacy and self confidence)
vicarious experiences - watching others of equal ability succeeding a the task (e.g. someone at your football club scoring)
verbal persuasion - being convinced that they have the ability to be successful at the task e.g. talk from a coach/teammate
emotional arousal - the performers perception of their psychological and physiological state (e.g. do they physically have the correct abilities - good CV endurance as a C in netball)
