What should a comprehensive safety program include?
Procedures, precautions, & training;
Must be in writing & accessible in the lab;
All employees should be made aware of these items;
No eating or drinking
What should be done to prevent zoonotic exposure?
PPE, proper disposal, proper disinfection
When should chemicals transferred into a secondary container have a secondary label?
When the material is not used within the work shift of the person who filled the container;
When the person who filled the container leaves the work area;
When the container is moved to a different work area & is not in the possession of the person who filled it;
When the chemical is removed from the primary container into another container
What are some forms of PPE?
Eye protection (goggles/glasses), protective clothing, shields/barriers (gloves, shoe covers, masks, face shields, etc.)
Who are the regulators that are related to the safe shipment of potentially hazardous or infectious materials in the US?
The USDOT
What does safe handling of syringes & sharps include?
Don’t remove needle cap in mouth or using 2 hands;
Don’t bend or manipulate needles;
Don’t pass uncapped needles;
Ensure proper animal restraint;
Ensure sharps containers are located at points of use
What are the 4 types of hazard controls?
Engineering control, administrative control, procedural controls, & PPE
What are engineering controls?
They change the work environment to eliminate/minimize hazards
What are administrative controls?
They are methods that change work policies to reduce the risk of exposure to hazards
What are procedural controls?
They are policies developed to modify behavior
What is an example of an engineering control?
Use of fume hood
What is an example of an administrative control?
Standard operating procedures (SOPs - eg. instructions on how to safely use a ladder)
What is an example of a procedural control?
Don’t use your mouth on a PCV pipette
Where are hazards associated with specific chemicals described in?
Safety data sheets (SDS)
What does OSHA stand for?
Occupational Safety & Health Administration
What is an example of a zoonotic exposure and how to prevent it?
Use gloves when collecting/handling urine to prevent exposure to leptospirosis
Level 1 Biosafety hazard
Do not cause disease in humans (eg. soap, vaccines)
Level 2 Biosafety hazard
Potential to cause human disease if handled incorrectly (eg. toxoplasmosis or salmonella through mucous membrane exposure, ingestion, or puncture)
Level 3 Biosafety hazard
Potential to cause serious & potentially lethal disease in humans (eg. tuberculosis through high aerosol respiratory transmission)
Level 4 Biosafety hazard
High risk of life-threating diseases (eg. ebola)
Category A shipping hazardous materials
Known or likely to cause disability, life-threatening or fatal disease; higher risk of infection
Category B shipping hazardous materials
Not life-threatening in healthy individuals; lower risk
Which category of shipping hazardous materials are most samples from veterinary patients?
Category B
How should hazardous materials be shipped?
Must have infectious substance label;
Sealed in leakproof containers;
Surrounded by a layer of watertight material;
Absorbent material between each layer
How should a good laboratory be designed?
Large enough to accommodate equipment & personnel, separate counters for centrifuges & analyzers, room temperature & draft-free, sink, fridge, storage, electrical supply, & internet access
