Design as text
What is the critical design approach Pets about?
The electronic objects mimic humand and animal behaviour to raise recognition of familiarity, affection, submission and intimacy in the viewer.
What is the critical design approach Aliens about?
The opposite of pets.
Which means they are misunderstood and outcasts.
The object does not have to fulfill our expectations; it can surprise and provoke.
But to fulfill this potential, designers need to leave behind a desire to model the new world of electronic products in their own, human, image.
What is the critical design approach Defamiliarization about?
The electronic objects that use the effect of strangeness infusing an encounter with the unfamiliar and the unknown, similar to art.
Designer needs to develop the conditions for informed appreciation rather than unthinking assimilation.
What is the critical design approach design as text about?
It’s about using design to tell a story or make people think, rather than just creating useful things.
What is a product metaphor?
“Any kind of product that is shaped to reference the physical properties(form, sound, movement, smell and so on) of another distinct entity for particular expressive purposes
How does a product metaphor differentiate from a linguistic metaphor?
In a product metaphor, target and source are literally merged into a physical product
Designers are responsible for making the physical manifestation of the features they wish to map from source to tangible and perceivable to users via the formal properties of the target
Product metaphors can be multimodal
ow do you apply a product metaphor?
select a relevant and meaningful source to the target product.
Mapping = the metaphor is physically applied by transferring source cues to the target
What are the two types of product metaphors?
Pragmatic and experiential
What do pragmatic intentions help with in a product metaphor?
Reduce the cognitive load associated with determining the meaning, function and use of a product
Turning a complex product or interaction into a clear and comprehensible one through:
Providing product identification = what is it designed for?
Conveying information about how the product is to be used or operated
What do experiential intentions help with in a product metaphor?
And what are the 3 different ways of doing an experiential intention?
Promoting rich sensorial emotional or meaningful product experiences through:
Prose and poetry = telling a story through the product
Ideology = attaching an ethical moral message to it
Creating something fun or witty

Full contradiction, marking a division in the authors mind
