Any form of feedback which lets the athlete know that they are performing well
What are the advantages of positive feedback?
Increase confidence and motivation
Increase reinforcement of successful behaviour
What are the disadvantages of positive feedback?
If used excessively. performers may struggle from overconfidence
What is the definition of negative feedback?
Any form of feedback which lets the athlete know that they are not performing very well
What are the advantages of positive feedback?
Can improve focus and motivation to complete goals
What are the disadvantages of negative feedback?
Can have a negative impact on confidence and motivation
What is the definition of intrinsic feedback?
Received from within the athlete. This is based on kinaesthetic information / feel
What are the advantages of intrinsic feedback?
Improve feel of movement
Elite performers can use without coaches external feedback
What are the disadvantages of intrinsic feedback?
Novice may not know how it should feel
May not know if the movement has been performed successfully

Received from outside of the athlete by using their senses
What are the advantages of extrinsic feedback?
Can be used during the early stages of learning
Can improve motivation and focus
What are the disadvantages of extrinsic feedback?
Doesn’t help the kinaesthetic feel
Can become reliant on external feedback
Can cause loss of confidence

Lets an athlete know how successful their performance was either in comparison to other competitors or previous performers

Success evaluated easily
Early success can improve persistence

No explanation why successful or not
