What were the difference in the tape used in 16-24 track machines compared to 4-8 track machines?
They used 2 inch tape rather than ¼ inch tape, which dramatically improved the quality of the recording.

Every instrument could have a close mic, including each part of a drum kit.
What did the increase in tracks mean?
No need for reduction mixing.

Modern conventional panning of instruments.
LEFT - cymbals, guitars, backing vocals.
RIGHT - cymbals, guitars, backing vocals.
CENTER - bass, kick drum, lead vocals.
What happened to the artefacts caused by tape machines now?
Unwanted sounds caused by the tape machine are only intentional now. Much better quality tape.
What did 16-24 track machines introduce for musicians?
More experimentation - could write new music whilst recording.
