Figurative Language
Language that involves the use of words and phrases that describe one thing in terms of another and that is not meant to be understood on a literal level.
Flashback
An interruption in the action of a plot to tell what happened at an earlier time
Purpose: Gives background that helps the reader understand the situation
Foreshadowing
A writer’s use of hints or clues to suggest events that will occur later in the plot
Purpose: Creates suspense and prepares the reader for what is to come
Hyperbole
A figure of speech in which the truth is exaggerated for emphasis or humorous effect
Idiom
A group of words that are common to the language but wouldn’t make sense if translated
Purpose: To establish a close connection with the reader since they understand them
