Hemostasis
The process of stopping bleeding.
Primary Hemostasis
The process involving platelet aggregation.
Secondary Hemostasis
The process involving fibrin formation that produces a clot (thrombus).
Thrombocytopenia
A condition with platelet levels less than 100,000 cells/uL.
Thrombocytosis
A condition with platelet levels greater than 750,000 cells/uL.
Thrombus
A blood clot that forms in a blood vessel.
Fibrinolysis
The process of breaking down clots.
Calcium and Vitamin K
Essential elements required for the coagulation cascade.
Intrinsic Pathway
Coagulation pathway activated by damage to a blood vessel.
Extrinsic Pathway
Coagulation pathway activated by damage outside the vessel.
DVT
Deep vein thrombosis, a condition where a blood clot forms in a deep vein.
Pulmonary Embolism
A blockage in one of the pulmonary arteries in the lungs, usually due to blood clots.
Antiplatelet Drugs
Medications that prevent arterial clots.
Coagulation Factors
Proteins in the blood that aid in clot formation.
Immune Thrombocytopenic Purpura
An autoimmune disorder resulting in low platelet levels leading to bruising.
Hemophilia
A genetic disorder characterized by deficiency of clotting factors.
Hemolytic Uremic Syndrome
A condition marked by progressive renal failure, hemolytic anemia, and thrombocytopenia.
