Why measure flexibility?
Greater ease of movement, less muscle stiffness, enhancement of skill, injury prevention, or identifying if someone has too much flexibility
What determines flexibility?
Joint structure and muscle elasticity/length
What is the result of a strong muscle contraction?
An opposite reflex that causes the muscle to relax
What happens when a muscle is stretched?
Receptors send message to spinal cord which sends signal back to muscle to contract
What are benefits of flexibility/stretching?
Joint health, prevention of low back pain/injuries, temporary delay of DOMS, relaxation, good posture/balance, and lifetime wellness benefits
What is estimated in flexibility assessments?
Range of motion
What are some examples of devices used to test flexibility
Goniometer, inclinometer, electogoniometer, flexometer, and tape measures
What are advantages of the sit and reach box test?
Easy/quick to perform, and is fairly common
What are disadvantages to the sit and reach box test?
Variations in limb length affect results and only targets lower back and hamstring ROM
What are underlying causes of back pain?
Poor muscle endurance/strength, poor posture, and poor body mechanics
What are some ways to prevent low back pain?
Warm ups, lose weight, stop smoking, avoid too much sitting, and use a supportive seat
