What is a variable in science give temperature as an example
In science anything that can change during an investigation, such as temperature is called a variable. the thing that is affected as a result of the change is also a variable
What is the independent variable use the example temperature
The temperature is the independent variable. It is independent because you change it to see how it affects another variable
What is the dependent variable use how high the ball bounces as an example
How high the ball bounces is the dependent variable, It is dependent because it changes when you change the temperature
What other variables could affect the ball
The height you drop the ball from
the type of ball
the surface that you drop the ball onto
the diameter of the ball
Why do they need to keep the control variables the same
They need to keep these variables the same during their investigation so that they do not affect the ball height. These are called control variables
What is the fair test enquiry is it always possible to keep all the variables the same
This is a fair test enquiry. Changing only one variable to examine the effect on another variable makes the investigation a fair test. Somethings it is not possible to keep al the control variables the same. This can affect the confidence in the evidence.
How can data be presented
your data might be words or numbers
What can variables be
Variables can be continuous and discontinuous
What is continuous data give an example
Continuous-they have any value such as length or temperature
What is discontinuous data
Discontinuous-they have either only whole number values such number of paperclips or woodlice which we can call discrete data
Values that are words such as blue or hot, we call categoric data
What graph do you use if both independent and dependent variables are continuous
If both the independent and dependent variables are continuous then you should plot a line graph if you are looking for a correlation you should draw a scatter graph
What should you do if the independent variable is catagoric
If the independent variable is categoric you should plot a bar chart or column graph. In some cases you might want to display discontinuous data in a pie chart.
where do you plot the independent variable and the dependent variable.
For both line graphs and bar charts, you plot the independent variable on the x axis and the dependent variable on the y axis
What should you do draw a chart or plot a graph
Choose which numbers the axes should start and finish on, mark out an equal scale showing what each square represents and label the axis with the independent variable on the x axis and the dependent variable on the y axis
What should you use to daw and plot the bars and axis
Use a pencil and ruler to draw axes and plot points or draw bars
What should you label the axis with
Label the axes with the quantity and the unit, such as time (s)
What should you label your graph with
Write a title for your graph
