noticing someone’s choking
ask if they’re choking, and if so call 911
adult choking
first do five back blows with the heel of your hand in between the shoulder blades while the person is bent forwards and then five abdominal thrusts with your fist above the belly button
infant choking
first do five back blows with the heel of your hand in between the shoulder blades while the infant is bent forwards and then change while supporting the neck to five chest thrusts with the tips of your fingers 1 ½ inches deep
perform anti-choke until
the object is dislodged or the person stops responding
if somebody becomes unresponsive
perform CPR
if it’s hard to do thrusts because the person is overweight, pregnant, or in a wheelchair
do chest thrusts higher up on the body
if you are choking and alone
perform abdominal thrusts, lean against an object to perform abdominal thrusts, and call 911
