What is Substance?
It’s a type of matter with a fixed composition that can’t be separated by physical means.
What are 3 types of substance?
Elements, Compounds, and mixtures
What is a compound?
Atoms of two or more elements which combine
What is an element?
A substance made of items of the same identity.
What is a mixture?
Material made of two or more substances that can be separated.
What are the two types of mixtures?
Homogeneous and Heterogeneous
What is a homogenous mixture?
Two or more substances with molecules uniformly spread out. Looks the same everywhere.
What is an example of a homogenous mixture?
Vinegar, gasoline….
What is a heterogeneous mixture?
Two or more substances where molecules can easily see. You can see the pieces.
What is an example of a heterogenous mixture?
Trail mix, fruit salad, and GRANITE!
What is the difference between substances and mixtures?
Mixtures can be separated and substances cannot.
What is matter?
Anything that has mass and takes up space.
What is a mixture and a substance?
Mixture has a varied composition and a substance has a fixed composition.
How can you determine which type of mixture something is?
By the size of the particle and whether or not it settles.
What is a solution?
A Homogenous mixture with particles so small they cannot be seen or settle to the top of the container. ex…. Perfume, vinegar, hydrogen priories, and antifreeze.
What is a colloid?
Particles larger than a solution but still to light to settle. Isn’t truly a solution. Ex… jello, hair jello, fog, and mayo
What is the Tyndall Effect?
Shining a beam of light at a colloid will make it scatter.
What is a suspension?
A heterogeneous mixture with large particles that settle at the bottom.
What are some examples of a suspension>
Salad dressing, paint, Chocolate milk, and Vegetable soup
What is it when water evaporates? Is that a physical or chemical change?
It is a Physical change. When water evaporates, nothing is changing in th molecules.
How could you describe matter?
Matter has properties that can be observed.
What is Physical Properties?
You can observe without changing substances
What is intrusive properties?
They do not depend on the amount of matter. It stays the same no matter if you have a little or a lot of matter. Ex… color density, or boiling point.
What is Entrinsic properties?
They depend on the amount of matter. Exxx. Length mass, and volume
What is a physical change?
Change in size, shape, and state. Does not change density, melting, cutting, and freezing.
What is a Chemical Property
Describes how a substance can turn into a new one. Ex… Flammable, combustible, toxicity, and reactivity.
What is a chemical change?
A change in one substance to another.
What is the Law of Conservation of Mass?
Mass of all substances before a change is equal to the mass of the substance after the change.
How are temperate and kinetic energy related?
Temperature is a measure of how fast molecules are moving.
What is kinetic theory?
It explains how molecules in matter behave.
What is matter composed of?
Molecules
What motion are molecules in?
Constant and random motion
What do molecules collide with?
Each other and th walls of there container.
What are the properties of solid?
It defines shape and volume.
What are the molecules like in a solid?
Closely packed together
What is the properties of a liquid state?
An indefinite shape and definite volume.
What are the molecules like in a liquid?
Have more space and slide across each other.
What are the properties of a gas?
Indefinite shape and volume.
What do the molecules look like in gas?
Have energy to spread out evenly in a container.
What does the state of matter depend on?
Tempature
What is tempature?
Average of kinetic energy
What is thermal expansion?
Increases in the size of substance, when temp increases.
What can pure substances be?
Elements or compounds
Are new substance created when a mixture forms?
NOOOOOOOOOOOOO
How can mixtures be separated?
Physical properties such as eavporation or filtration.
Are mixture bonded together?
Noooooo
How can mixtures be classified?
On how well they are mixed.
How can we separate mixtures?
Magnets, filtration, and evaporation.
