‘drank gin when he was alone, to mortify a taste for vintages’
Gin was a cheap low class drink, while the vintages were expensive wines ect. Mr Utterson seems to value highly his appearance to other people, surpressing his desires in order to seem more put together and professional
‘lean,long,dusty,dreary…somehow loveable’
Stevenson uses Mr Utterson to show duality even in the first chapter, despite Mr Utterson being ‘dreary’ he was still loveable. This emphasises the idea that one person is able to be more than just ONE thing
‘enjoyed the theatre, had not crossed the doors of one for twenty years’
Surpressing an enjoyment for the theatre suggests that Mr Utterson may have been of strict christian faith like many of the audience in the 1880’s would’ve been. As many religious groups viewed the plays as immoral and sinful. Mr Utterson likely tries to make his image seem polished and serious.
‘I incline to Cain’s heresy’ ‘ I let my brother go to the devil in his own way’
Mr Utterson is the type of friend to watch his friends absolutely ruin their lives and not say anything, instead he supports them. He makes no move to correct them of their wrongs
