Why are there very large areas that have a very low population density

This is because 2/3 of the country if mountainous meaning housing would be difficult to build, land is not arable, the weather is extreme and anyone who tries to live there is isolated as roads are difficult to traverse.

What are high density rural areas like

They are usually flat and at the bottom of valleys and have villages and small farming towns. There are also people in these areas that commute to larger cities to work as there are good road and rail connections between them. The climate is warm and temperate allowing for easy farming
