Author’s Purpose
The reason behind why a writer creates a text. It's the motivation and intent that drives the writing process.
Inform
The goal is to EDUCATE and enlighten the reader on a specific topic. E.g. Newspapers, textbooks, encyclopedias
Persuade
The author wants to convince or CHANGE the readers mind to adopt a certain viewpoint, opinion, or belief. They want you to TAKE ACTION. E.g. advertisements, political speeches, essays
Ethos
It is about establishing the speaker's or writer's credibility or trustworthiness.
Logos
Involves using logic, facts, and evidence to persuade the audience.
Pathos
Appeals to the audience's emotions, trying to evoke feelings such as sympathy, anger, happiness, or fear to persuade them.
Entertain
The author wants to engage and captivate readers with a story, anecdote, or humor. This type of writing aims to provide ENJOYMENT and PLEASURE. E.g. fictional stories, anecdotes, poems, theater plays
Explain
Writing to explain gives you step-by-step instructions or clarifies how something works. E.g. how-to guides, recipes
Reflect/to express
The author wants to express his/her thoughts, feelings, and personal experiences on a particular subject. E.g. personal essays, diaries, poetry
Entertain (In writing a short story)
Many short stories are written to engage and amuse the reader. The author might create compelling characters, intriguing plots, or vivid settings to captivate the audience.
To Convey a Theme or Moral
The author might use the narrative to express a particular viewpoint or to impart a lesson.
Evoke Emotion
An author might write a short story to provoke certain feelings in the reader, such as joy, sadness, fear, or empathy.
To Reflect on a Personal Experience
Sometimes, short stories are a way for authors to explore their own experiences, thoughts, or feelings. They might use fiction to process or share personal events.
To Experiment with Language or Form
Short stories can also be a playground for authors to experiment with different writing styles, narrative structures, or literary techniques.

While less common in fiction, some short stories are written to shed light on a particular issue or to educate readers about a specific topic or cultural experience.
Linear Text
Text that needs to be read from beginning to end in order to make sense of the text. E.g. short stories, novels, letters, educational texts
Non-linear
Non-sequential, meaning the readers do not have to go through the text in a sequential manner in order to make sense of the text. E.g. graphic organizers, concept maps
Graphic Organizer
A visual representation that helps organize information in a structured way, focusing on comparing, contrasting, categorizing, or sequencing information.
Concept Map
A visual representation that illustrates the relationships between different concepts, ideas, or information.
Flow Chart
A visual diagram that shows the steps in a process or system using different shapes and arrows.
Venn Diagram
It consists of overlapping circles, where each circle represents a set. The areas where the circles overlap show the similarities between the sets, while the nonoverlapping parts represent what is different to each set.
Charts and Graphs
Visual tools used to represent numerical data, trends, and comparisons in a clear and concise manner.
Bar Graph
Uses rectangular bars to represent data. Each bar's length or height corresponds to the value it represents.
Pie Chart
A circular chart divided into slices, where each slice represents a proportion of the whole.
Line Graph
Commonly drawn to show information that changes over time.
Timeline
A graphical representation that displays events in chronological order, from the earliest to the latest.
Table
A systematic arrangement of data in rows and columns, allowing for easy comparison and organization of information
Map
Visual representation of an area, showing geographic features, landmarks, and sometimes data related to those features.
