Taylor’s cosmological argument

  1. For everything that exists there should be some reason for its existence (PSR)

  2. the universe exists

  3. There should be some explanation for the existence of the universe

  4. 3 possible options

    1. The universe depends on itself for its existence (the universe is necessary)

    2. The universe was created by a powerful CB

    3. The unvierse was created by a powerful NB

  5. 4a is absurd because we can easily assume that the universe could have not existed in the first place

  6. 4b is incomplete because who created the CB?

  7. This leaves 4c, so the creator of the unviverse appeals to the creative actions of a NB

  8. Therefore the unniverse was created by a NB who is naturally called god.

Rowe’s objection, likes the argument but premise one is an assumption and it could be false (does not like PSR)

Taylor would say that it is reasonable until someone proves it to be false

What are the things that the cosmological argument does show?

  1. at least one NB exists

  2. at least one NB created the universe

  3. at least one NB is very powerful and knowledgeable

  4. The universe is not all there is

3

What does the cosmological argument not show?

  1. That more than one NB exists

  2. That the NB is the theistic god

Ockham’s razor

Given that all else is equal when choosing between two plauble options we should choose the argument with the fewest things required to explain the argument.

So lets just assume that there is one NB
