Covalent Compounds
Compounds formed by the sharing of electrons between non-metals.
Ionic Compounds
Compounds formed by the transfer of electrons from metals to non-metals.
Valence Electrons
Electrons in the outermost energy level of an atom that are involved in chemical bonding.
Diatomic Molecules
Molecules consisting of two atoms of the same element, such as H2, N2, O2.
Acids
Water solutions of some molecules that produce hydrogen ions (H+) in solution.
Binary Acids
Acids that do not contain oxygen, characterized by the prefix 'hydro' and the suffix '-ic'.
Oxyacids
Acids that contain oxygen, often without the hydro prefix.
Lewis Dot Structure
Diagrams that represent the valence electrons of atoms within a molecule.
Polar Covalent Bonds
Bonds where electrons are shared unequally between two atoms.
Nonpolar Covalent Bonds
Bonds where electrons are shared equally between two atoms.
